“We will lose on legislation. But we will win the message war every day, and every week, until November 2010,” said Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., an outspoken conservative who has participated on the GOP message teams. “Our goal is to bring down approval numbers for [Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and for House Democrats. That will take repetition. This is a marathon, not a sprint.”
Now that’s what I call moving the country in a positive direction. McHenry who is know for brash and thoughtless statements in the past, seems to think that bring down approval numbers for Pelosi is the cure all. Obviously, by his statement McHenry is far more focused on the next election than getting the country back on its feet. Typical GOP failed strategy of attack point fingers and continue to get nothing done.
However, we shouldn’t put the blame for the divisive GOP behavior only on McHenry’s shoulders, lets not forget Limbaugh and his wish for Obama to fail. How does that make sense? Has it dawned on Limbaugh that if Obama and his plans fails the country fails. I guess not, since that would be a deep thought for the pill popping Limbaugh.
If you disagree with Limbaugh, you become fodder for his hot air show. The GOP base applauds his hate and irrational rhetoric. Newt Gingrich is now in Limbaugh’s sights;
Newt Gingrich became the highest profile Republican yet to push back against Rush Limbaugh, saying on “Meet the Press” that it’s “irrational” to hope for the President of the United States to fail.
“You’ve got to want the president to succeed,” said the former House Speaker. “You’re irrational if you don’t want the president to succeed. Because if he doesn’t succeed the country doesn’t succeed… I don’t think anyone should want the president of the United States to fail. I want some of his policies to be stopped. But I don’t want the president of the United States to fail. I want him to learn new policies.”
Oh and let’s not forget Ann Coulter, the other illogical spokesperson for the GOP. In a recent article, John McCain’s daughter, Meghan has penned her thoughts on Coulter.
To make matters worse, certain individuals continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about Republicans. Especially Republican women. Who do I feel is the biggest culprit? Ann Coulter. I straight up don’t understand this woman or her popularity. I find her offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time. But no matter how much you or I disagree with her, the cult that follows Coulter cannot be denied. She is a New York Times best-selling author and one of the most notable female members of the Republican Party. She was one of the headliners at the recent CPAC conference (but when your competition is a teenager who has a dream about the Republican Party and Stephen Baldwin, it’s not really saying that much).
There does however, seem to be some frustration and disgust within the GOP for the hate mongers of the party. Frank Schaeffer whose parents were the driving force behind the Christian Right has called the Republican party “arsonists.” In his recent Open Letter to the Republican Party and in an interview with D.L. Hughley, Schaeffer had a lot to say about the Republicans and the Christian Right.
- You Republicans are the arsonists who burned down our national home. You combined the failed ideologies of the Religious Right, so-called free market deregulation and the Neoconservative love of war to light a fire that has consumed America. Now you have the nerve to criticize the “architect” America just hired — President Obama — to rebuild from the ashes. You do nothing constructive, just try to hinder the one person willing and able to fix the mess you created.
- How can anyone who loves our country support the Republicans now? Barry Goldwater, William F. Buckley and Ronald Reagan defined the modern conservatism that used to be what the Republican Party I belonged to was about. Today no actual conservative can be a Republican. Reagan would despise today’s wholly negative Republican Party. And can you picture the gentlemanly and always polite Ronald Reagan, endorsing a radio hate-jock slob who crudely mocked a man with Parkinson’s and who now says he wants an American president to fail?!
- With people like Limbaugh as the loudmouth image of the Republican Party — you need no enemies. But something far more serious has happened than an image problem: the Republican Party has become the party of obstruction at just the time when all Americans should be pulling together for the good of our country. Instead, Republicans are today’s fifth column sabotaging American renewal.
Maybe there is hope that somewhere, some place there are Republicans that we can work with to help us solve the mess we are in. And, maybe someday we can rid ourselves of the hate, belittling and twister ideology that we call Limbaugh, Coulter and the Christian Right.
